Stall Tunxdorf is a family-run Friesian horse yard in Papenburg-Aschendorf, Lower Saxony, with stabling for more than 30 horses. The Lemstra and van Ingen Schenau family breed Friesians and raise their own foals, following the DFZ and KFPS studbooks. Training services include breaking in, corrective schooling under saddle, driving training and preparation for breed shows. Marit van Ingen Schenau runs weekend riding clinics built around individual lessons for riders from beginner to advanced, rounded off with hacks through the Tunxdorf forest. The yard also offers sale horses and brokers purchases and sales on behalf of clients.

The broodmares come from long-established family lines and are covered exclusively by top stallions from the Celle state stud. Foals and young horses grow up with close daily human contact alongside the farm's suckler-cow herd. Feed is grown on the farm's own 70 hectares of arable land, so very little industrially produced feed is used.

Hermann Terhorst

The Terhorst family farm at Niederlangen in the Emsland, first recorded in 1534 as the Joos Hof, has combined arable farming with horse breeding for many generations. Horses are kept on extensive land in light, airy stables and fed home-grown forage, and the farm runs a qualified breeding programme. In 2001 a veterinary practice specialising in horses was added on the farm itself. A modern indoor school and a 60 m dressage arena complete the equestrian facilities. Visitors are welcome to come and see the yard.

Gestüt Leineblick is a Hanoverian breeding operation run by the Asche family at Luttmersen near Neustadt am Rübenberge, north-west of Hannover. Breeding centres on a band of broodmares with strong jumping bloodlines, and homebred horses have been placed in young show-jumper classes and awarded the Hanoverian premium. The farm raises foals, young horses and colts through to riding age on its own pastures. Youngstock from outside owners is taken in for rearing, and livery places are offered. Pferdezucht Peter Mahler is a Hanoverian breeding operation run by the Mahler family at Neuhaus in Lower Saxony. The stud keeps a band of state-premium broodmares and has bred licensed stallions and successful Verden auction horses. Alongside its own breeding it raises foals and youngstock for other breeders, with group housing over winter and large marsh pastures from late April to early November, and it also takes horses in for summer grazing. Daughter Kerstin Mahler, trained at the Hanoverian Verband in Verden, handles backing and schooling and presents horses at mare shows, mare performance tests, auctions and stallion licensings.

Sportpferdezucht Kuhlmann is a family breeding operation in the Dammer Berge near Neuenkirchen, in the heart of the Oldenburg horse country. Founded by Josef Kuhlmann and continued by his son Friedrich with wife Annelie and their children, the farm breeds Oldenburg dressage and jumping horses from nine home-bred broodmares whose lines have been kept in the family for up to four generations. Youngsters are raised on the farm's 30 hectares of grassland and offered for sale from weanling age through to ridden competition horses. The yard has an indoor school, dressage arena and jumping course, and has produced Grand Prix horses such as Don Lucca and international jumpers including Silvio and Galan.

Hartungshof is a family farm near the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony that specialises in breeding Mangalarga Marchadores, the Brazilian gaited breed known for its smooth marcha. Around 60 hectares of pasture support the herd, which is bred for strong natural gaits and an even temperament suitable for riders of many abilities. The farm sells young stock from foals up to five-year-olds as well as made riding horses, and offers stud service from its own stallion Excalibur vom Kreiswald.
